The leaves beginning to change color and the days starting to become shorter are signs that fall is upon us and soon temperatures will be cool enough to turn on the heat. It’s not too early for homeowners to start thinking about transitioning their HVAC systems for the fall and winter heating season. But before flipping the switch, Mckinnon Heating and Cooling suggests completing the following to ensure optimum efficiency of your system as it warms up the chilly mornings and evenings.
1. At your earliest convenience, schedule an inspection of your HVAC ducts and interior heating equipment. A system tune-up can help increase the longevity of your system and prevent breakdowns.
2. Keep a reminder on your phone, refrigerator, or close to your thermostat to clean or change your air filters every month.
3. Have a Mckinnon technician inspect all the outside components of your system to be sure no repairs are needed and the equipment is operating properly.
4. If you are fond of fires and use a real wood-burning fireplace, be sure to turn off or at least significantly lower your heating system output while the fire is burning.
5. Inspect your windows and doors for air leaks. Check the attic and basement as well. If you are losing heat through leaks, your system is working harder than it needs to, costing more money.
6. Use a programmable thermostat to maintain better temperature control throughout the day. Lower it at night and while you are at work during the day and set it to warm up as you get up or come home.
If your system is getting on in years, let Mckinnon know. We can install an energy efficient system for you. A new energy efficient HVAC system will offer better performance and use less electricity, ultimately giving you a comfortable home temperature at an affordable rate. You don’t want to wait until something malfunctions and you’re stuck wearing your heavy winter gear indoors this winter.
