Autumn just arrived and while you may not want to be thinking about winter, it’s time to do so in order to make sure that you and your home are actually ready for it this time. Winter can be tough when you live in or around Toronto and we want to make sure that you and your family are well set and protected in the event that this next season is another cold, snowy, tough one.
1. Check all windows and doors.
Make sure that all of your doors and windows are well insulated, have proper weather stripping on them, and will seal shut when closed. If there are any issues with any of those windows, then it’s time to have them addressed and repaired if necessary.
2. Get the salt, snow shovels, and snow blower ready.
Even though it’s the beginning of fall, you know full well that the snow can begin falling any time. While October is still considered early for snowfalls, it can happen. Make sure that you have the proper tools handy and available and that the snow blower (if you have one) is in good working condition.
3. Check the generator.
If you have a backup power generator, you’ll want to check to make sure that it’s in operating condition. You should also begin to obtain plenty of fuel to keep it running for a few days in the event that a major storm knocks out the power.
4. Mark out walkways and the driveway.
Even if you take care of clearing your driveway and walking paths when it snows, it’s nice to know where the edges are. Using reflective posts, you can mark the ends and everyone will know exactly where the edge is, This can help people avoid taking a bad step into a hole or off the edge of the sidewalk.
5. Having your heating system cleaned and inspected.
While this is last on the list, it should be the first thing that you have done. Call an HVAC company to come to your home, inspect your furnace and the rest of the components of your heating system, and having it cleaned.
When you do this, you’ll know that you’re ready for the long winter season that’s already knocking on Toronto’s door.
